The Prosafe team recently conducted a practical occupational first aid and fire safety training for staff at Seweco Paints Limited, strengthening the company’s capacity to prevent, prepare for, and respond effectively to workplace emergencies.
The session combined hands-on demonstrations, scenario-based practice, and fire safety awareness, equipping employees with skills that can make the difference between a minor incident and a serious injury.
Why First Aid Matters at Work
Providing first aid is an important part of creating a safe and healthy work environment. However, it does not replace the need to identify workplace hazards, assess risks, and eliminate or minimise them at the source.
A strong safety culture begins with prevention: proper housekeeping, safe handling of chemicals and equipment, clear emergency procedures, and continuous employee awareness. First aid readiness is the vital next layer of protection when prevention is not enough.
What the Training Covered
The first aid component gave participants practical, life-saving skills, including:
- Performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and using an automated external defibrillator (AED)
- Recognising the warning signs of heart attack, stroke, and shock
- Applying bandaging techniques for cuts, sprains, and suspected fractures
- Managing burns, allergic reactions, and poisonings
- Responding to breathing difficulties and unconscious casualties
- Conducting a scene assessment and following emergency communication protocols
Participants practised responding calmly and systematically: checking for danger, assessing the casualty, calling for appropriate help, and providing initial care until professional medical support arrives.

Fire Safety Awareness
Because Seweco Paints operates in an environment where flammable materials and chemical products may be present, fire safety was a central part of the training.
The session reinforced key principles such as:
- Identifying common fire hazards in the workplace
- Understanding the fire triangle and how fires start and spread
- Selecting and using the correct fire extinguisher for different classes of fire
- Safe evacuation procedures and assembly points
- Raising the alarm early and communicating clearly during an emergency
- Knowing when to fight a small fire and when to evacuate immediately
Employees were reminded that no property, product, or equipment is worth a life. The first priority in any fire emergency is always personal safety.
Building Confidence, Not Just Skills
Beyond technical competence, the training fostered a sense of empowerment among Seweco staff. Trained employees do not simply wait for help, they become the help.
When workers know how to assess a scene, administer first aid, use emergency equipment, and communicate effectively, they respond faster and with greater confidence. This reduces panic, limits the severity of injuries, and supports a safer workplace for everyone.
A Shared Commitment to Safety
Prosafe commends Seweco Paints Limited for investing in the health, safety, and wellbeing of its workforce. This training reflects a shared commitment to building workplaces where every employee understands the risks, knows how to respond, and can act decisively in an emergency.
First aid saves lives, but prevention protects them. Together, risk assessment, fire safety awareness, and practical emergency response create a stronger, safer, and more resilient workplace.
