First Aid and Fire Safety Training at Canadian Oil Refinery and Energy Limited
Prosafe Consultancy recently conducted a first aid and fire safety training for staff at Canadian Oil Refinery and Energy Limited. The training aimed to strengthen employees’ ability to prevent accidents, respond quickly to emergencies, and protect lives in a high-risk industrial environment.
Because the company handles flammable materials in its lubricant processing operations, fire preparedness is especially important. Equally, having staff trained in first aid ensures that injured or unwell colleagues receive immediate care before professional medical help arrives.
Skills Covered in the Training
Participants received practical instruction in essential emergency response skills, including:
- Performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
- Using an automated external defibrillator (AED)
- Recognising signs of a heart attack, stroke, and shock
- Bandaging cuts, sprains, and suspected fractures
- Responding to breathing difficulties and unconscious casualties
- Assessing an emergency scene safely
- Communicating clearly with emergency services and workplace responders
The sessions combined demonstrations with hands-on practice, helping staff gain confidence to act calmly and correctly during real emergencies.
Fire Safety in a Lubricant Processing Facility

The fire safety component focused on improving awareness, preparedness, and coordinated response in the event of a fire. Lubricant production involves materials that can ignite easily, making fire one of the most serious risks at the facility.
The training covered:
- Common causes of workplace fires
- Fire prevention and safe handling of flammable substances
- Early detection and raising the alarm
- Safe evacuation procedures and assembly points
- Correct selection and use of firefighting equipment
- The importance of clear communication during an emergency
Staff were reminded that firefighting equipment should only be used for small, contained fires and when it is safe to do so. In any fire emergency, protecting human life comes before protecting property.
Building a Safety-First Culture
The training brought together factory workers, administrators, safety personnel, and support staff. This inclusive approach is important because workplace safety depends on everyone, not only the safety team.
When employees understand the risks, know how to respond, and can support one another during an emergency, the entire organisation becomes safer and more resilient. Trained staff don’t wait helplessly for help; they become the first line of response.
